Loft Insulation

As much as 25% of all the heat lost from an average home escapes through the roof. Over 1 million homes have no loft insulation at all.

Heat rises, and in an un-insulated home 25%* of your heat is lost through the roof. Insulating your loft, attic or flat roof is a simple and significantly effective way to prevent heat loss and therefore reduce your heating bills. Loft insulation is effective for at least 40 years, and it will pay for itself over and over again in that time.

Loft insulation not only keeps you warm in the winter, it also helps you stay cool in the summer by preventing the heat in the attic coming through the roof space.

Loft insulation works by creating a barrier to the hot air, which is rising from the lower levels of your house towards the roof. As hot air rises, it starts to escape through your roof unless you place something in its way. Therefore, it is only adequate insulation that prevents it from being lost into the atmosphere.

To achieve the maximum heat retention, it is recommended that at least 270mm thick insulation be used in the loft of all homes. At this level, the least amount of heat will be lost. So it may be worth checking your existing insulation to see if it is actually at this level.
